  • The Creator Rewards program offers significantly higher payouts, increasing the revenue per mile (RPM) from $0.02-$0.04 to $0.4-$1.
  • TikTok's RPM is influenced by various factors, including video engagement rate, originality, search value, and play duration.

  • Creators can further boost their income through external revenue streams like affiliate marketing and brand partnerships.

TikTok recently announced the introduction of a new monetization program: the Creator Rewards Program. With this initiative, eligible creators can increase their earning potential by 5x to 20x times their previous revenue.

How much does TikTok pay per view in 2024?

If you’ve ever made a video on TikTok, maybe you've searched the Internet for information about how much TikTok pays. The standard number you may find is that earnings range from $0.02 to $0.04 for every 1,000 views. However, as of September 2024, these numbers are no longer valid.

Up until then, content creators received their payments through the TikTok Creator Fund, which is where these numbers originated. However, in early 2023, TikTok launched a beta version of what was called the "Creativity Program." After the initial rollout, this program was eventually launched in March 2024 as Creator Rewards, which is now the only way to earn money from views on the platform.

TikTok Creators Fund vs Creator Rewards (formerly Creativity Program)

Gone are the days of the old TikTok Creator Fund, when a million views was worth just $20 to $40. According to an official statement from TikTok, the new Creator Rewards has increased the earning potential of content creators by 250%. This doubles the number of those who make at least $50,000 per month.

The old Creator Fund provided creators with an RPM (Revenue Per Mille), or revenue per 1,000 views of just $0.02 to $0.04. The new Creativity Program, instead, provides RPMs ranging from $0.4 to $1.

To put things in perspective, here’s a quick recap of how much a video was worth with the old TikTok Creator Fund vs. the new Creativity Program, per number of views:

Eligibility criteria for joining TikTok Creator Rewards

To earn money with the TikTok Creator Rewards program, you must first ensure you are eligible to join it. Eligible creators must:

  • Be at least 18 years old (or 19 in South Korea).
  • Live in one of the following countries: some text
    • United States
    • Brazil
    • United Kingdom
    • France
    • Germany
    • South Korea
    • Japan
  • Use a Personal account (Business accounts aren’t eligible).
  • Have a TikTok account that is in good standing.
  • Have 10,000 followers or more.
  • Have a minimum of 100,000 video views in the last 30 days.

Additionally, content must adhere to these requirements to be eligible for monetization:

  • Be original, not copied or reproduced with slight modifications from other creators.
  • Be one minute or longer.
  • Respect the Community Guidelines.
  • Not be branded content, advertisements, paid promotions, or sponsored posts.
  • Duets, Stitches and Photo Mode videos are not eligible for the program.
  • Only unique views are counted as valid for rewards.
  • Views are valid only if a viewer watched your content for at least 5 seconds, and didn’t tap "I'm not interested".

What factors determine creator payments on TikTok?

As you've probably noticed, videos must be at least 1 minute long to be eligible for a payout on TikTok.

The introduction of this new requirement has changed the way TikTok videos are created. Additionally, TikTok has changed the metrics that determine how rewards are earned. Your RPM can now increase or decrease depending on several factors. This means the same number of views can be worth a lot more if you focus on quality content.

Let's explore these factors and how you can increase your RPM.

Audience location

The geographic location of your target audience strongly influences how much TikTok pays. This affects not only your RPM for the Creator Rewards program, but also any income from ads, brand deals, and sponsorships.

If your fanbase comes from high-paying countries such as the U.S., U.K., or Canada, your earning potential will be significantly higher.

Play duration

TikTok considers videos valuable only if users watch them from start to finish. Metrics like watch time and finish rate are tracked to make sure that your audience stays glued to the screen, and are used to calculate RPM.

Keep the production value of your content as high as possible to captivate your audience, and encourage them to watch your content until the end.

Search value

Search value means that your content should be aligned with trending search terms. This is another metric that is tracked to ensure that your content’s topic is popular and pertains to a high-demand category.

TikTok encourages creators to check popular search terms and trends with the Creator Search Insights Tools. This way, the algorithm will reward you by making your videos easier to discover and increasing your RPM.

Engagement rate

The more engaged your audience is, the better. Engagement increases all your other metrics, encourages your fanbase to communicate with you, share their ideas, and provide their feedback. It’s a great way to understand what they want and don’t like, and it’s also a factor in calculating RPM. Each like, comment, and share counts towards your final RPM score, so make sure to interact with your audience as much as possible!

Originality

One of the less transparent metrics that TikTok uses to estimate a creator's RPM is originality. Your content must be absolutely unique, focused on a storyline, view things from a different perspective, and have a clear topic.

While this might seem challenging to put into practice, just try to be yourself. Offer personal opinions on whatever topic you're discussing, create your own materials, and focus on providing your fanbase with a unique angle when you tell your story. Adding the right text, captions, and music can also help.

Other ways to make money on TikTok

If you're not eligible to participate in the Creator Rewards program, don't worry. The platform offers other monetization options that you can explore. Let’s take a look:

LIVE gifts and subscriptions

Live streams are a popular way to earn some cash, especially if you have a loyal fanbase and a high number of followers. Besides being a great way to boost your engagement levels and spend some time with your followers, the LIVE program can boost your revenues with donations.

During live streams, your TikTok followers can use Diamonds, the platform’s digital currency, to buy LIVE Gifts. You will earn 50% of the monetary value of these virtual gifts, often amounting to substantial sums. Your biggest fans can also receive special perks like access to subscription-only TikTok content by paying for a LIVE subscription.

To be eligible for TikTok LIVE and to receive LIVE Gifts and LIVE subscription money, you must:

  • Be 18 years or older (or 19 in South Korea).
  • Have a minimum of 1,000 followers.

TikTok Series

TikTok Series is a feature that allows content creators to place up to 80 videos behind a paywall, making them accessible only to paying users. These premium videos can be longer than usual (up to 20 minutes), and creators can set their rates between $0.99 and $189.99.

Currently, TikTok is not taking a cut from Series revenue, but it does charge processing and app store fees that typically amount to 30% of the final payout.

To be eligible for TikTok Series you must:

  • Be 18 years or older (or 19 in South Korea).
  • Have a minimum of 10,000 followers.
  • Have a minimum of 1,000 or more views in the last 30 days.
  • Have a Personal or Business account in good standing.

TikTok Pulse

TikTok Pulse is a suite for advertisers to ensure their ads are placed immediately after the platform's most-watched content. Brands get the unique opportunity to have their ads placed close to the top 4% of trending content. Creators receive 50% of the revenue generated by these ads.

Being eligible for this revenue-sharing model isn't easy. You need to be among the top TikTok influencers, and your video must rank in the top 4% within the platform. Here are the requirements:

  • Be 18 years or older (or 19 in South Korea).
  • Have a minimum of 100,000 followers.
  • Have posted at least 5 videos in the last 30 days.
  • Have joined the Creator Rewards program.

However, meeting these requirements only gets you enrolled in the TikTok Pulse program. Which of your videos actually qualify for ad placement isn't clear.

Also, while some people claim the program can provide impressive RPMs, many say final payouts are often quite modest (to put it lightly). Still, TikTok Pulse earnings are an extra applied on top of what you’re getting from the standard Creator Rewards program. That means applying for this suite may still be worth your time.

TikTok Effect Creator Rewards

TikTok Effect Creator Rewards is a $6 million fund to reward creators who make high-quality augmented reality (AR) effects and filters. With this program, any special effects you create will be tracked for 90 days. If they're used in at least 100,000 videos by TikTok users, you'll start collecting rewards.

Payouts vary depending on your RPM and how many times the effect has been used, but they’re serious enough to be worth a look. For instance, if an effect reaches 10 million unique video publications, you’ll earn $14,000. Not bad, eh?

Here are the eligibility criteria for the TikTok Effect Creator Rewards:

  • Be 18 years or older (or 19 in South Korea).
  • Be a Gold, Platinum, or Diamond Badge creator.
  • Have published at least 5 effects.
  • Have at least 3 effects used in 1,000 qualified videos each.

TikTok Shop

TikTok Shop allows influencers to sell products directly on the platform through live streams. You can now sell products from your ecommerce store while streaming high-energy pitches to your audience.

Products can be showcased on your profile, and you can put all your products in a publicly-available basket within the Shop tab. Even better, TikTok will take care of everything for you, including checkout, packaging and shipping the items.

Here are the requirements to be eligible to sell your products on TikTok Shop:

  • Be 18 years or older (or 19 in South Korea).
  • For individual sellers: Have a valid U.S. passport, U.S. driver's license, or proof of legal U.S. residency.
  • For business sellers: Register your business in the U.S. and have a warehouse based in the U.S. .
  • Only sell products that are allowed by the platform. You can check the full list of TikTok Shop prohibited products here

Note that while TikTok Shop is currently available only in the U.S., it may expand to the European market.

Different ways to increase your earnings on TikTok

While TikTok's built-in monetization programs offer substantial earning potential, many creators also employ other revenue streams to make their activities more profitable. From creating brand sponsored content to offering specialized services, there are many venues you might want to explore to boost your income.

Here are a few.

Brand partnerships

Many brands are eager to pay TikTok influencers to create high-converting, user-generated content (UGC) to endorse their products. Brand partnerships can be quite profitable, especially if your follower count is high enough.

While TikTok celebrities like Charli D’Amelio may command fees up to $100,000 for a single promotion, influencers with at least 10,000 followers can typically charge $20 to around $100 per post.

Affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing is a simple and effective way to earn money across social media platforms, and TikTok is no exception. To get started, find an affiliate marketing program that resonates with your target audience and niche, and promote their products.

When a customer purchases a product through your unique affiliate links, you earn a commission. These commissions usually range from 5% to 50%, depending on the product and program.

Offer consulting services

If you've established yourself as a trusted voice in your niche, your followers may be willing to invest in your expertise directly. Many TikTok influencers offer consulting services, such as one-on-one coaching sessions or online teaching courses. Pricing for these services can vary widely based on your expertise and niche, but anything between $100 to $500 is usually considered a fair market value.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, TikTok's Creator Rewards Program earnings vary depending on factors like engagement, location, and view time. You'll want to make sure you're creating high-quality content that attracts viewers to make a substantial amount per video. Part of this involves idea generation and planning but also make sure you're using quality creation tools like Riverside. Do longer TikToks make more money?

Yes and no. Longer videos do have the potential to earn more since they  may have higher engagement rates and watch time. Optimal video length can vary depending on your other revenue streams, so your overall monetization strategy is a factor here as well.

Duets, Stitches and Photo Mode videos are not eligible for monetization.

You can also earn through brand partnerships, affiliate marketing, or by offering consultation services outside the platform.

Can creators outside of certain countries earn from TikTok?
