How to use Riverside's video compressor

Video compressor FAQs

What is a video compressor used for?

A video compressor is a software that reduces the file size of a video. It can do this using two methods. Lossy compression removes data from the video file to reduce its size while with lossless compression no data is lost. If you want to compress video without losing a lot of quality, try a lossless video file compressor like Riverside.

Does compression reduce video quality?

Video compression can reduce your video’s quality, but it all depends on the type of compression you’re doing. Simply put, video compression works through a program or software called a codec. This uses an algorithm to compress a video and then decompress it into a new video format.

Some codecs are lossless and perform compression without heavily affecting your video’s quality or removing data. Instead, they work with the data there is and reconstruct it to make the file smaller. The issue with lossless compression is that it generally isn’t able to reduce a video file as much as lossy compression can. With lossy compression, videos can be reduced into much smaller file sizes but you may lose data and the quality of your video may be reduced.

What is the difference between H.264 and H.265?

H.264 and H.265 are both different codec standards for video compression. The main difference between the two is that H.264 compresses using macroblocks and H.265 compresses using coding tree units. Instead of going into the techy details, this means that H.264 only works with a maximum of 16x16 pixel blocks when compressing a video. H.265 divides the picture into different coding units, working with higher pixel blocks. In short, H.265 uses more advanced technology and compresses more efficiently without losing video quality.

Read our guide for more information on codec and video file formats.

Which video compressor is best?

The best video compressors are fast, easy to use, and allow you to compress video without heavily losing quality. Riverside ticks all these boxes, so we suggest it as your best option for video compression online.

How do I compress an MP4 file?

You can compress an MP4 file just like any other video file. Simply choose a video compressor, upload your video, and let the compressor reduce the size of your MP4 video. Better yet, try Riverside! It’s easy to use, quick and lossless so it doesn’t reduce the quality of your video, making it a great option to compress your MP4 file.

How are recording hours calculated?

We calculate the hours from your monthly subscription based on the total time recorded.

For example, if you have 1 host and 3 guests (4 total participants), and you record for 1 hour, this will only count as 1 hour of total recording time towards your monthly limit.

Can I buy a plan on a monthly basis or only on a yearly basis?

We offer plans on both a monthly and a yearly basis. Yearly plans are at a reduced rate and monthly plans you can cancel at any time.

What if I go over my hours?

We won’t ever cut off your recording. If you consistently record more than your monthly limit, we will reach out to discuss a plan that fits your needs.

Do my unused hours roll over to the next month?

All prices are in USD.

Will any unused time from my trial be added to my account when I start a paid plan?
