Cut (Video & Audio)

Table of contents:

What is a cut?

A cut is a transition between two shots or clips where one scene instantly shifts to another without fading or transition effects.

What is the basic cut transition?

A straightforward cut transitions from one shot to the next without any effects. This cut is also known as a hard cut or A to B cut.

What are the different types of cuts?

  • Jump Cut: A sudden, jarring cut where you can see a noticeable advance in time or action. This is often used to create urgency or speed up sequences.
  • L-Cut: The audio from the first scene continues to play as the visual shifts to the next scene, allowing the sound to bridge the transition.
  • J-Cut: The audio from the next scene begins playing before the visual appears, preparing the audience for the upcoming shot.
  • Match Cut: A cut that transitions between two visually similar shots, creating an almost seamless connection between scenes, often used to draw a visual analogy.
  • Cross-Cut: Alternating shots from two scenes happening simultaneously, often used to build tension in action sequences.

What does cutting refer to in video and audio editing?

Cutting video or audio refers to removing a portion of the media to shorten or eliminate unnecessary sections. In video editing, this involves trimming unwanted footage, while in audio editing, it means cutting out parts of the sound, such as silence or noise, to streamline the content and improve the final product.

How to Cut Out Parts Of a Video With Riverside

  • Step 1: Open Riverside and create your own online recording studio. Record your video content.
  • Step 2: After all your files upload, select "Go to Editor" from the recording dashboard.
  • Step 3: In the editor, you’ll see a preview of your transcript, along with the usual video timeline editor.

You can cut out sections by deleting text in your transcript. Select the content you want to cut (by highlighting the text), and then press "Remove" to cut it. It works the same way as editing text in a word processor.

Alternatively, you can cut out parts using the video editor:

  • Step 1: Click on the beginning point of the section you’d like to cut, and a marker should appear. Select split and a cut will form in the editor. Do the same on the end point of this cut. Select the whole section and click "Remove."

When you have finished editing your video, simply save and export your video file in the format that suits you.
