What is AC3?

AC3 or Audio Codec 3 is also known as Dolby Digital. Dolby Laboratories developed this lossy audio compression technology to keep file sizes small while still delivering multi-channel surround sound (up to 5.1 channels). You’ll often see this format used in DVDs, Blu-ray discs, streaming services, and digital TV broadcasts.

Key things to know about AC3:

  • Supports surround sound: Handles up to 5.1 surround sound (6 audio channels), providing an immersive listening experience.
  • Lossy compression: Some audio data is discarded to reduce file size, offering efficient sound delivery but lower fidelity than lossless formats.

What does an audio codec do?

An audio codec is a software or hardware tool that compresses and decompresses audio data. It reduces file sizes by removing less critical information (in lossy codecs) or retaining all data (in lossless codecs). This compression makes audio files smaller and easier to transmit or store, while the decompression restores the audio for playback.

Is AC3 good quality?

Yes. Even though the lossy compression format sacrifices audio quality to a small extent, AC3 offers good audio quality, especially for surround sound applications.

Which is better, AC3 or DTS?

Like AC3, DTS (Digital Theater Systems) is a lossy audio codec used for delivering multi-channel surround sound. However, DTS offers higher bit rates than AC3 which means you get better sound quality.

But AC3 compresses audio more efficiently and is more widely supported on consumer devices.

What is the best audio codec?

It depends on the use case:

  • FLAC is considered the best for lossless quality, as it preserves every detail of the original audio.
  • AAC and AC3 are popular for streaming and home theaters, balancing optimal quality and file size.
