Lower Third

Table of contents:

What is the lower third?

The lower third is an element placed in the lower section of the video frame so it doesn’t get in the way of the main video. Names, titles, or subtitles are common lower third elements.

Why is it called a lower third?

It's called a lower third because the graphic or text appears within the lower one-third section of the screen.

What is the rule of lower thirds?

The rule is to position the text or graphics in only the bottom third of the screen so the rest of the video remains unobstructed.

How long should lower thirds last?

Typically, lower thirds should remain visible for 3 to 7 seconds so viewers have enough time to absorb the information.
