What is LUFS (Loudness Units Full Scale)?

LUFS is a standardized unit used to measure perceived audio loudness to ensure consistency across different audio and video platforms.

What LUFS is too loud?

Anything above -14 LUFS is considered too loud for most platforms.

What is 16 LUFS?

16 LUFS represents a loudness level of -16 Loudness Units Full Scale, common for podcast audio.

What is 14dB integrated LUFS?

14dB integrated LUFS is the average loudness level over time, typically the standard for streaming platforms.

What is peak vs LUFS vs RMS?

Peak measures maximum volume, LUFS measures perceived loudness over time, and RMS (root mean square) measures the power your audio signal creates over time.

How to normalize audio levels on Riverside

  • Log in to your Riverside account.
  • Open your recording in the Editor or upload an external file.
  • Click "Share" in the top right corner of the Editor.
  • Toggle "Normalize Audio Levels" in the Export Options dialog box.
  • Click "Export" to apply the normalization.

Riverside normalizes audio to the EBU R 128 standard (-23 LUFS).
