Fine Cut

Table of contents:

What is a fine cut?

A fine cut is an advanced stage in video editing when the project is almost finished but is undergoing final edits.

All major edits, like scene arrangement, transitions, and pacing, have already been made at this stage. During the fine cut stage,  the editor focuses on small details such as smoothing out cuts, perfecting timing, adjusting audio levels, and making final tweaks to color grading.

What is first cut vs fine cut?

The first cut is the initial, rough version of an edited video where all the scenes are arranged in order, but the transitions, timing, and edits may still need another round of review. The fine cut is a more polished version with refined details and smooth transitions and represents a nearly completed video.

What comes after a fine cut?

After a fine cut, the project moves to the final cut, where any last tweaks are made, ensuring the video is ready for distribution or screening.
